The Farmhouse Kitchen in October

An autumn morning, with everything in use and nothing precious.

A lived-in farmhouse kitchen with sage-green cabinets, a green enameled Dutch oven on a black range, an end-grain butcher block with sourdough, tall wooden mills and copper pots on open shelves

A farmhouse kitchen on an autumn morning: the green Dutch oven is already on the stove, there's a loaf on the butcher block, and the copper pan on the shelf has clearly seen a few Thanksgivings.

Inherited kitchens are working kitchens. Warm wood, a little brass and a few heavy pieces that get used every day. Here are four of them, each as an Heirloom and a Find.

How to make it feel inherited

  1. Keep the pot on the stove. A colored enamel Dutch oven left out says this kitchen gets used.
  2. Go thick on the butcher block. An end-grain board that stays on the counter reads as decades old.
  3. Let copper show. One copper pan on an open shelf warms a whole wall.
  4. Use the good things every day. Saving them for best is a new-house habit.
